Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde - Zweigstelle Oldenburg -, die Jüdische Gemeinde zu Oldenburg, das Leo-Trepp-Lehrhaus Oldenburg und das Bundesinstitut für Kultur und Geschichte der Deutschen im östlichen Europa (BKGE) laden ein zum Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Marcin Wodziński (in englischer Sprache) mit anschließender Diskussion: "Mapping the Spirit: The Geography of Hasidism / Den Geist verorten: Zur Geographie des Chassidismus".
Der „Historische Atlas des Chassidismus" ist das erste kartographische Werk zum Chassidismus. Es erschien 2018 nach zwölfjähriger Recherche (Verlag Princeton University Press). Der Band präsentiert eine illustrierte Geschichte einer der bis heute weltweit wichtigsten gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Bewegungen des Judentums (mit 74 großformatigen Karten, zahlreichen Fotos, Abbildungen und Graphiken), ihre Ausbreitung im 18. Jahrhundert in Osteuropa und von dort in die ganze Welt. Themen sind auch die verschiedenen chassidischen Dynastien, die Entwicklung des Chassidismus nach dem Holocaust sowie die heutige Situation der Bewegung. Es soll auch der Frage nachgegangen werden, welche Zusammenhänge zwischen räumlichen Charakteristika des Chassidismus und seiner Spiritualität bestehen.
Der "Historische Atlas des Chassidismus" ist methodisch innovativ und präsentiert Kartendarstellungen von Waldemar Spallek, ebenfalls Universität Breslau, die aufgrund von neu erhobenen Massendaten erstellt wurden und ungewöhnlich dichte Informationen enthalten.
Prof. Dr. Marcin Wodziński ist Direktor des Tadeusz Taube-Lehrstuhls für Jüdische Studien an der Unversität Breslau/Wrocław.
